Last week on Tuesday, I picked up a few plants for my boyfriend’s house. He has a wall that desperately needed something there. So I got a purple lilac, peony and a white lilac plant. After digging through 1.5 ft of pebbles and rocks (thanks rocky mountains), I got them put in the ground. Filled in the holes with some rich soil from another part of the property.
Here’s a reference photo of all the deer that roam the yard each night! SO MANY!
Well, while these plants are supposed to be deer resistant naturally. (Deer aren’t supposed to like strong floral plants) Deer around here eat anything, and we have about 8 in our yard every night. So I had to figure out something to keep my plants from getting eaten down to nothing. I researched some DIY ways to keep deer off plants. I’m excited to say the spray I made, has worked!! There’s been no nibbles even off the plants!
Deer Resistant Plant Spray
- 16 oz spray bottle
- Young living peppermint essential oil (it is the strongest smelling)
- 1 egg
- Hot sauce
To begin, beat the 1 egg in a bowl and strain into spray bottle through funnel. Add several dashes of hot sauce to the bottle. 20 drops of Young Living peppermint essential oil. (YL is the only brand I use due to purity, and strength of the oils. Grocery store bought peppermint essential oil smells like candy. YL peppermint is strong, and earthy smelling. Smells just like the plant, like it should be. Learn more on my Essential Hope page!) Fill with purified or filtered water. Spray all over plants. I doused each leaf and flower. Make sure to apply after every rain. And at least 1 time weekly if no rain. Store in the refrigerator.
